JOHANNESBURG, 29 JANUARY 2008. - The JSE reported a 217% increase in the volume of derivatives traded on the bourse from 103, 2 mil in 2006 to 327,3 mil in 2007. This takes account of all derivatives including Index Futures, Index Options, Single Stock Futures, Single Stock Options, and Dividend Futures.  Trade in all financial derivative instruments on the JSE showed a positive growth and thus facilitated the JSE’s move to number 12 on the Top 20 list of global derivatives exchanges from 15th position in 2006.

According to Allan Thomson, Director of Trading at the JSE: “The phenomenal growth in volume is primarily attributable to the single stock futures market.  Trade in these instruments accounted for nearly 81% of the volume on the JSE from January to September 2007 and year-on-year (Jan to Dec) growth rates of 280% according to the World Federation of Exchanges latest report. In total, 265.5 mil contracts were traded in 2007 on the JSE.”

This growth is in tandem with global trends as total volume on derivatives exchanges worldwide reached 11.4 billion contracts in the first nine months of 2007, up 26.6% from the previous year.  This is in comparison to a total of 18.9% growth in 2006.
